Saturn Glasses are the first offering from Superduperstudio, a series of glassware collaborations between myself and fellow CCA classmate (now fellow teacher) Chris Yamane. Our simple idea was to design a line of glasses that would be difficult to spill. By building a cheap and adjustable mold, we were able to quickly refine a concept with the help of local artisans. Our last step was to employ CAD analysis of our designs' physical properties— the final and minute adjustments to our glasses' form optimized their function

To prepare the material for each cup, the molten glass is shaped by hand before being blown into a mold. We currently work with artisans at Novotny Glass in the Czech Republic, and Glow Glass in Oakland. Each glass is then annealed overnight (a process which cools the glass slowly to relieve material stresses), cut, and polished by hand.
