Another SUPERDUPERSTUDIO collaboration with Chris Yamane, our Lucky Break Glassware is inspired by artists like John Cage and Sol LeWitt, who used chance as a vehicle for experimentation. We imagined their methodologies as a way to create unique products at mass-production prices. Rather than composing repeatable patterns for a line of bowls and cups, we developed a system for applying color to glass in a way that is difficult to control.
Using heat as one of our variables, we found ways to warp and twist color color across our surfaces— providing infinite possible outcomes, within the boundaries of a cohesive formal language. Instead of waiting for happy accidents, we intentionally drove mutation, unexpected outcomes, and delightful surprises.
